United States v. Rotimi Oladimeji

  • Case Summary: A man from Texas by the name of Rotimi Oladimeji, 37, pleaded guilty in front of U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel to two counts of mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud. Furthermore, he also admitted that he scammed a woman out of more than $1.2 million. This case was liked by someone in Nigeria who created a fake LinkedIn profile of a veterinarian and animal behaviorist. They also used a picture of a German man. In August of that year, a woman from St. Louis created an online dating profile. That is when Oladimeji and his accomplices started to communicate with her using their fake Beligan identities. They manipulated the women into thinking they were going on a business trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and asked her for $150,000 to help on an "urgent business issue." This then led to several electric transfers of money from the women between October 2019 and March 2020. As a result, the woman sent $931,000. Oladimeji also said in his plea that he had another victim. He made her send cash and checks via FedEx to the Texas home of his co-defendant, Olumida Arkinmade, 37. Oladimeji also admitted recruiting other individuals in the names of Akinrinmade and Adewalw Adesenya, another Texas resident, to receive the funds in exchange for a cut of the money.

  • Charges: Two counts of mail fraud (Title 18, U.S.C, Section 1341) Two counts of wire fraud (Title 18, U.S.C, Section 1343) One count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud (Title 18, U.S.C, Section 371)

  • Case Verdict: Rotimi Olajimeji was charged with two counts of mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud. Each count carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, and a fine of $250,000. Rotimi also has to repay $1.5 million due to the scams.
